Learn how to make hemp milk with just a blender, hemp seeds and water!

Homemade hemp milk tastes amazing, is easy to make in minutes and is the perfect dairy-free alternative for smoothies, coffee, lattes, cereal, drinking and more.
It’s made with just 2-ingredients: hemp seeds and water, though you can enhance the flavour with different add-ins like sea salt and vanilla.
Recipe Features
- Super easy to make in 60 seconds!
- No soaking or straining needed.
- An easy, homemade dairy-free alternative to cow’s milk.
- A nut-free & soy-free alternative to almond milk, soy milk or cashew milk.
- Low-carb (if not sweetener is used).
- Easy to flavour with different add-ins like cinnamon, vanilla and dates.
- Perfect for drinking, oatmeal, smoothies, coffee and more!
Nutrition & Benefits
- Hemp seeds are a complete source of protein, containing all the essential amino acids.
- Hemp seeds contain a good ratio of omega-3, 6 and 9 and not only are they high in omega-3 fatty acids but they also contain magnesium, an essential mineral for metabolizing fats.
- Hemp seeds containe iron, zinc and antioxidants such as vitamin E.
- 74 calories with 4 g of protein and 6 g of fats per 1/2 cup serving.
- Low-carb and low-sodium.
Equipment Needed
All you need to make quick and easy homemade hemp milk is:
- Blender. I would a high-speed blender like a Vitamix or Blendtec but any blender works. A high-speed blender will always give the best results but hemp seeds are soft and blend easily, so you can make this in a regular blender as well.
- Storage container. I like mason jars with plastic lids or Weck jars to store the milk but any glass container works great.
That’s it! You do have the option to strain it through a nut milk bag but I really don’t think it makes much of a difference.
Variations & Add-Ins
If you just use hemp seeds and water the milk will have a nutty, earthy flavour. I think it’s delicious as is but it also benefits from various add-ins. To switch up the flavour, try:
- Vanilla Hemp Milk: Use 1-2 tsp vanilla extract and 1 tbsp maple or agave syrup or a few pitted dates.
- Chocolate Hemp Milk: Add 1 tsp cacao powder or regular cocoa powder and sweetened to taste with maple syrup, agave syrup or dates.
- Strawberry Hemp Milk: Add 1 cup fresh strawberries, 1 tsp vanilla and 1-2 tbsp maple syrup. Strain this version through a nut milk bag then store in the fridge for up 3 days.
How to Make Hemp Seed Milk
It’s honestly so easy, there’s not much you need to know! Here’s how to make it:
- Add the hemp seed to a high-speed blender with water and any add-ins you’d like.
- Blend on high for 30-60 seconds until smooth and creamy.
- Pour into a container and drink right away or chill in the fridge until ready to enjoy.
Hemp Milk FAQs
Yes, hemp milk can be heated. Try it in a homemade latte! You can see it frothed in a homemade matcha latte in the photo below.
I use the Milk Cafe Brother from Breville, which I love, by the way, and it frothed up the hemp seed milk beautifully.
It can also be frothed cold and poured over an iced matcha or your favourite coffee.
No. Hemp milk does not contain CBD or THC.
You can use hemp milk for smoothies, oatmeal, coffee, lattes, matcha, soups and in baking recipes.
Nope! That’s what makes hemp milk so quick and easy. Just throw them in the blender with water, blend and enjoy.
Taste & Texture
- Hemp milk definitely has a distinctive earthy, nutty flavour though overall it’s quite mild.
- I think hemp milk benefits from add-ins such as dates, vanilla and sea salt. They really elevate the taste and give it a wonderful flavour.
- For the most basic milk, all you need is water and hemp seeds but I would recommend adding the optional flavour enhancers such as a sweetener, vanilla and pinch of salt.
- I use 3 cups of water which results in a creamier milk. You can add up to 4 cups to stretch it a bit further. It’s still nice and creamy with 4 cups of water so just play around to see what consistency you like the best.
- Straining: Hemp milk comes out smooth and creamy without straining, however, it will contain some hemp “pulp”. If you’d like to remove those little specks, you can run it through a nut milk bag. It doesn’t do much but will make it a little smoother.
How to Store Hemp Milk
Fridge: Hemp milk can be stored in a container in the fridge for up to 5 days, maybe longer. Just give it good shake before use as it will separate after sitting.
Note that hemp seed milk will naturally separate as it sits in the fridge, so be sure to give it a good shake each time you use it.
Freezer: If you can’t consume the hemp milk within 5 days, it ca be frozen in an ice cube tray and then transfered to a freezer bag for up to 3 months. The frozen cubes can be used in smoothies.

Ingredients
- 1/2 cup hemp seeds, 80 g
- 3-4 cups water, I use 3 cups or 750 mL
Optional Ingredients
- 1/2 tsp sea salt
- 1-2 medjool dates, 3-4 small dates or 1 tbsp maple syrup or agave
- 1/2 tsp pure vanilla extract
- for chocolate milk, add 2 tbsp cocoa powder and include a sweetener
Instructions

- Taste and adjust add-ins as needed.
- Optional to run it through a nut milk bag for the smoothest texture. Hemp milk does not require straining but if you’re using it for drinking, coffee or homemade lattes, you may want to run the mixture through a nut milk bag or strain it through a cheesecloth.
- Serve right away, use in smoothies, with granola or cereal, in baking or other recipes or pour the into a container and store in the fridge for up to 5 days. Best enjoyed cold. Shake well before consuming.
Thank you. Looking forward to trying this recipe out. Do hemp seeds mix well with other nuts for mixed nut milk?
Iโm sure you could but I havenโt tried it! Let me know if you do.
Just wondering if this works in hot beverages like tea/coffee? I know some homemade seed/but milks I’ve made don’t hold up(curdle)
I use it in coffee and I often froth it up. It does have a hemp taste to it though, so if you donโt like that, you may not enjoy in coffee/tea. Thanks!
Greetings Deryn
